OUR CAMPUS
New City School is housed in a turn-of-the-century school building in the City’s Central West End neighborhood. We like to call it our “friendly castle.”
Behind our red doors are three floors of classrooms – pre-primary and kindergarten on the lower level, first through third grades on the first floor, and 4th, 5th and 6th grade classrooms on the upper floor. A full-size gymnasium, 250 seat theater, and dedicated spaces for science, art, performing arts, movement and music, computer, and Spanish instruction are housed in the “friendly castle.”
Exciting New Spaces
In 2005, a 2,200 square foot dining hall, which opens onto a large amphitheater, was added to the building, along with a new 5,400 square foot library. The library design received an award from the International Forum for Innovative Schools and is featured in the book, “The Language of School Design.” Harvard Professor Howard Gardner, who conceived of the theory of Multiple Intelligences, was present to help cut the ribbon to open the library.
Opportunities Outside
Outside our building, pre-primary and primary playgrounds, a soccer field, track, softball field, and the New City School Centennial Garden are available for play and learning. In addition, the library is open one Saturday morning each month for neighbors and the broader community.
